Now on to the physical cabinet itself, there has been a fair few changes but nothing dramatic thus far. This most visual improvement has to be in the above image, the marquee has finally been custom made after many of moons with the generic defender logo. To make this awesome marquee (haha) I just downloaded various video game sprites from the interwebs and make a collage of game characters in Photoshop, added some text with some fancy lines and I'm done. Keep reading for a download link to the Photoshop file.

Well isn't this a sorry sight, my arcade cabinet has been going over some drastic changes over the past few months from PC replacements to slight hardware tweaks such as extra hard drives. Saying that it hasn't gone to well as the PC has never been working a 100% with it often taking 10 minutes of faffing around to get it to boot. So over Christmas I was generously given this old PC that was unwanted from a friend, the specs are as follows:

It's been a while since I last updated everyone on my arcade cabinet project, so here is a little taste of what I have done. Well to be honest not much has been done, here is a checklist of the changes though: - Added a temp marquee to check scale and backlighting
- Added a lamp behind the marquee for a glowing effect
- Added another 40GB hard drive (not fully working yet)
- Added 1Gb of ram now totaling 1.75GB
- Re-cabled the back of the unit to make everything more accessible.
The machine is still working great and especially since I have added the extra 1GB of ram Model 2 flies. I still need to sort out a front-end system for the machine but I can't find one that is simple and easy to use but yet has some graphical appeal to it. Check out another picture after the bump: |

Not a huge amount of progress as not much needs to be done really apart from the software side of things but here's a little update for you all. I've fixed the front draw which fell off during the cabinet's second coat of coloured paint and I've added some cardboard to go around the monitor so you cannot see it through the plexi-glass. After playing on the cabinet for a few hours it tends to get a bit painful on the legs so I went about buying myself 2 awesome barstools (see the images below). I've not had any problems with the unit yet and I'm really impressed on how well the speakers work considering they were dirt cheap ones from Argos, I think the cabinet might be amplifying the bass slightly but it still sounds awesome! There isn't much left to be done apart from the graphical side of things such as some stickers and my desperate search for a hi-res Marquee. I've setup the front-end of the cabinet slightly using Hyperspin but I need to download the game themes and find some extra space on my HDDs for extra roms. For now check out the following pictures and I will keep you all updated: |

Not too much to say in this article as it's fairly outdated now (by a month) and it would be as fun as watching the paint dry itself! I'll just go over some of the key changes and issues I had while finally giving my arcade cabinet some well deserved paint. First off before I gave it some colour I drilled 2 holes either side of the cabinet to act as my "pinball holes" and then when about sanding certain areas down such as these holes so you wouldn't get a splinter while trying to push the buttons. One of the big issues I had was that the shelve to hold the x-arcade stick was a little too low so the sides were casuing the stick to float slightly and slide around in the unit, after a good hour of sanding I finally finished and it was ready to get painted... again. I touched up some of the areas with the base coat again and some of the areas I missed before such as the bottom part of the marquee box, after that my unit finally got some colour! I was a bit worried after the first coat as it dried extremely streaky but after the second coat it looked fantastic, a little bare but still it looks great. Check out the picture after the break. |
