As you can tell from the above picture and the title my little Retro PC is getting a big make over. There isn't too much to say about it at the moment but I will be covering each phase briefly with a full summary at the end of the project (which shouldn't hopefully be to far away). I will be posting up a larger planning article soon with references to other arcade cabinets and how I went about my scale drawing along with what I needed from my design, so until then sit tight with the above tease... |

Welcome to part from of my not so long lived Retro PC... You will learn more about that soon. Well I've got it all running and setup with MAME and the Model 2 emulator (you can see running). I've fully updated the PC along with drivers for the mouse and Xbox Gaming Wireless Receiver, I've not setup much else on it at the moment and you will understand why in another article coming soon! Overall its working pretty well with a few problems on hanging at bootup for 1min sometimes, I think this is something to do with a dodgy ram chip I'm using. I've still got another hard drive which needs putting in and a new sound card as you can see I need to use an Air Freshener to enable sound (the front port is dodgy and the rear is dead). But once these are sorted thats about it. So that ends the chapter of the Retro PC, it was short, it was loved and now it's turning into something bigger! I've currently got it setup for quick pick-up and play but all this is going to change soon... |

My Retro PC is alive!!! I've brought it back from the dead (just about) with a few alterations and a few problems that need fixing. Okay so I'm not going to use the insane ATI X1950XT as I think it will overpower a fair amount of the DOS games plus it uses a fair amount of juice to power it. So I'm going to go with my good old classic ATI Radeon 9200 AGP to keep the machine running, it's working fine so fare without any slow down with anything I have tested (considering these games are made for 486s no wonder!) but I've still got some problems. First problem is the terrible quality of the picture! Urg, my old digital camera from 5 years ago+ really can't take a picture and I apologies for that, now onto the first problem with the PC and that's the dodgy AGP slot. I'm not sure what is causing it but sometimes I keep getting "No Signal" I remove the graphics card chuck it back in and it's fine but its usually when I've added something new into the PC. Second problem is the sound, I've got it working on the front port of the case but that has been broken for years and you have to keep wiggling the jack to get any sound. I have tried adding a sound car but then I had the problem of getting "no signal" removed everything and chucked it all back in now I can see what I'm doing but the PC has picked up the sound card. So Still a fair amount of stuff to be fixed but I'm impressed that its working with XP and my good old DOS games, next up virtual machine! |

Here lies one of my new projects... That's right I want to make myself a retro PC to play some of my older games such as Theme Hospital and Duke Nukem 3D. Not much has happened to the machine yet and I'm having troubles getting it to display anything but I haven't been able to try the graphics card in it yet (only an old ATI one which I think is broke) as I haven't got the right power cable for it yet. I need to do some searching around my house trying to find the elusive cable then hopefully it will be plain sailing. There isn't much inside the rig as of yet as I need to find my spare hard drives etc also I have no idea what this machine is going to become. If it's just going to be a retro PC for my old games or if it's going to end up becoming an arcade machine. Well here's the current spec: |
