22 August - Day 4 Progress - After much searching I finally found the sailors and got the information I needed, which was to search for someone with glasses and a leather jacket. Yay more searching.

After visiting the jazz bar and getting owned by some sailor wannabes at a game of pool I was unsure where to find the other bar I was suggested. After a night of hunting I couldn't find it as it wasn't on the map and no one was giving me any more information, I finally found it tucked down a stair way opposite the motorbike shop. Now that I had to wait for a few until 7 pm so I needed to find something to do, after a little running around I found a slot house! I never knew that Shenmue 1 had a slot house so I had to give it go and went about losing 1500 yen and just missed out on a 4000 yen win due to me not betting enough. Finding the game much more enjoyable already so bring on the next play session.

More Game Journey Shenmue Edition coming soon..

20 August - Day 3 Progress - I've found out sailors can be found in bars and the jazz one is my best bet.

The questions ryo asks always gives me the giggles, they way all of his response can be "hmmm" I know this is a translation error again as in Japanese this response would most likely be "I see". Also the run around you have to do just to find where sailors are is incredible, each person will give you one tiny bit of information. For example someone will say this person knows about sailors, then that person says bars, then barmen say try these other bars. Surely bikers would be able to say they saw them last night at the jazz bar etc. Can't wait for gameplay to pick up a bit.

18 August - Day 2 Progress - After helping the old woman find the house age was looking for I went on a wild goose chase around Doubita looking for members or "The Three Blades". After talking to one of the barbers father I learnt that I should be looking for sailors...

The introduction does seem to get lost in the translation of the game as the writing so far is pretty random with none of the conversations feeling natural. Still it has it's charm from awkward encounters with Jamaican hot dog sales men and non Chinese, Chinese people. The setting still has a great atmosphere around it with plenty of people going about their daily lives and each building adds something to the environment. My only complaint so far is that there hasn't been any action or such over the past hour of playtime which is making the introduction feel very long winded.

16 August - Day 1 Progress - Just finished the introduction and began my first objective of helping an old woman find a house.
A big welcome to reminise lane already after the first 30 minutes of gameplay, firstly the distinct feel of a dreamcast game which I haven't experienced for a while and secondly that fantastic opening introduction to the Shenmue story. The charm of the awful voice acting only adds to my nostalgia, I'm looking at you "Ryo chocking to death". In today's standard of gaming storytelling the opening sequence seems to far to the point with all of the key parts of the story covered in 5-10 minutes of cutscenese. But yet I found this refreshing not having to listen to 20-30 minutes of pointless backplot and training game jargon.

I felt kind of lost is translation at the beginning of the game due to everyone telling ke to visit other people without any indication of where they would be, add to that the use of Japanese names eg "niamoi-San" made it all the more confusing. I believe some of this is deliberate as there isn't any training that takes you out of the atmosphere that the intro built, no tip boxes, no out of character scenes. Everythig is based around Ryo and his simple quest of trying to find out what happened "that day of the incident". Sega has done a great job of sublimonily teaching you how to play the game with scenes such as the orthan kitten showing you how to use the selection tree, also as I mentioned before how people just give you names rather than locations hinting towards you actually want to try remember these peoples names and become one with the character without knowing any of the history of Ryo and the other NPCs.

First day over and already I've totally skewed my vision of twitter style updates, hopefully my thoughts will get smaller as the game progresses.
