| Eyefinity - Crysis |
|
Well I think we all know Crysis is the most demanding consumer PC game to date and probably the perfect candidate to test ATI's Eyefinity technology to see how well it scales and performs. Upon first loading up Crysis it displayed as 3 separate screens due to my old resolution settings, a quick visit to the options I was able to choose the resolution 5760x1080 without any tweaking needed. It quickly display my new resolution the the main menu sticking to the centre screen and everything keeping it's correct proportion, but as soon as I loaded my previous save game I came across my first issue: The loading screen didn't blackout the other 2 monitors and rather stretched to it's highest resolution cover about 20% of the 2 side monitors and giving me a random blue background, the background colour changed depending on what level I was loading. Along with the the left side of the black border wasn't fully aligned, nothing major but just something worth noting. The only other issue I noticed was stretched red-dot sight when zooming in with the attachment, you can see the issue in the following image: When playing at this high of a resolution with and ATI Radeon 5870 Crysis really does struggle if you have any form of AA on, I tried with 2,4 and 8xAA with 2 fetching around 25-30 FPS, 4 struggling at 10-15fps and 8 not even worth mentioning at around 5fps. I could barely tell the difference between the 3 levels of AA visually as Crysis looks fairly smart without any AA or 2xAA, I would also like to add I was playing with a custom config setup on the highest level of detail.
Overall Crysis performed really well under Eyefinity without any major game spoiling errors, some little tweaks are needed to make the game natively work with this new technology. It's just a shame that no setup would be able to run the game at a high level and framerate until 2015. The game still looks great and is very playable as long as you turn your AA down, works as a great tech demo to show off to your mates and make their setup feel inadequate. Gold medal for you Crytek. Crytek's game keeps pushing the boundaries of what computers are capable of by showing how a game engine can expand so well with technology that didn't exist during it's creation. All of the UI systems scale well with only a few hiccups with the loading screens and fov clipping, the only thing which does take a major hit with Eyefinity is the framerate, you will be looking at a 30-40% hit. Overall Crysis is very playable on eyefinity without having to mess around with any settings there is a patch out over at Widescreen Gaming Forums which will allow you to centre the HUD to your centre monitor.
