![]() Those are 42" TVs and look how small they look!
As its been the school holidays that means a lot of extra work for us ICT technicians and along with that work comes some nice kit for us to play with. The main project over the summer holidays has been a complete redesign of the schools hall. There used to be a huge sign in front of the stage which would show pupils merits but also block the view of the stage, this is where most of the pupils used to hide when doing a presentation. So once the contractors had finished removing the sign and leaving that terrible mess you can see in the pictures (which only got worse as time went on and the dirt got moved around), it allowed us to start getting the kit ready: ![]() Equipment Used:
Wow that was a fair amount of equipment to sort through, although the projector and screen was contracted out to a company so we didn't have to sort that out. First up was installing the wall mounts onto the back of the plasma screens which was a right pain but easily done, getting the wall mounts onto the wall was a different story. Worried that some intelligent pupils would try to swing from the plasma screens we had to drill straight through the wall (around 2ft). Well doing that 8 times wasn't fun but the on-site caretaker did most of the work so I can't complain personally. But getting the plasmas onto the mounts really wasn't fun as they aren't the easiest of things to maneuver along with some of the brackets deciding to cease up making us remove the plasmas to rectify the problem. Once they were up we had to wire them up to the wall, which was easily done thanks to the electricians wiring skills. They are connecting via a scart lead which has a converter to CAT-5 allowing us to output the same image on all the plasmas from the central unit. The only drawback is that scart was ordered so the resolutions on the plasmas aren’t great but perfectly acceptable for slideshows and video. Next up was sorting out the unit which as ever came flat packed meaning we had to build it... and what do you know... it was the wrong one so we had to take it apart again and rebuild the new one that came a few days later. All the cabling was done at this point so it was just a matter of hooking everything up and testing it. After a bit of trial and error we managed to get everything working allowing the plasma screens, the laptop and the projector (wireless) to all display the same image at the same time. Also it’s all setup for when another computer is added for a separate permanent presentation to be displayed on the plasma screens. The only remaining problem we have now is that the projector works wirelessly which means a huge delay in high resolution movies with them seeming to run at 2 frames per second. I'm glad it’s over but it’s probably just begun. ![]() 4 Plasmas and a 10ft screen. Don't worry, the blurring isn't your eyesight. |
